Lok Adalat settles over 79,300 cases; pendency in lower courts down 27%

At its session held on December 6 the National Lok Adalat amicably settled 79,309 of the total of 97,887 cases placed before it, reducing the pendency in subordinate courts by 27.18%. The Adalat met in all areas of the state except Lahaul & Spiti, where road connectivity was disrupted due to snowfall in Rohtang, from 10 am till 11 pm with a success rate of 81.02%.

The Lok Adalat also awarded compensation of around `6.54 crore in motor accidents claims cases and about `4.61 crore was recovered in prelitigation matters including recovery of bank loan cases and cases under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

Last year the Lok Adalat was held on November 23 and only 16,416 of a total of 40,497 cases were settled. In a press statement issued here, Himachal Pradesh High Court chief justice Mansoor Ahmad Mir said" "The Lok Adalat saves a lot of time and is an extension of the tradition of resolving differences through settlement and the Legal Services Act gives a legal status to it."

In the high court, 42 of the 111 cases placed before the National Lok Adalat were settled. The cases involved 28 categories including compoundable criminal cases, cases under the Negotiable Instruments Act, motor accidents claims, matrimonial and family cases, labour disputes and land acquisition and civil cases.
