The bookies were arrested from Ludhiana with several mobile sets and gadgets.

"They had taken rented accommodation where they had set up proper exchange (equipments and gadgets used by bookies). We have seized some 36 mobiles, the exchange, laptop, a dongle and a recorder. Other details were recovered while they were trying to fix things up for tomorrow's match between South Africa and New Zealand," said assistant commissioner of police, Ludhiana, Manjit Singh Deshi.

The police are still investigating the case and the role of other bookies from different parts of the country.

Earlier, another scandal rocked Indian cricket, when the Supreme Court asked Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president N Srinivasan, to step down to ensure a fair probe into illegal betting during last year's Indian Premier League (IPL), in which his son-in-law has been indicted.

Meiyappan was arrested in late May 2013 by Mumbai Police probing illegal betting on the cash-rich Twenty20 league but was released on bail within two weeks.
