Fortis Hospital held a pulmonary check-up camp for the traffic cops at Fortis Medcentre, Ferozepur Road, on Wednesday, in which 40 cops were found suffering from hypertension. Sixty cops in total had got themselves registered for the test, which was done by consultant pulmonologist Dr Amit Gupta and his team.
Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Richa Agnihotri was also present as chief guest.
Dr Amit Gupta said, "The traffic police personnel have the unenviable task of standing at busy junctions and regulating vehicular movement. The occupational hazard they face remains a constant exposure to polluted air, which results in rise in allergic respiratory problems including asthma and chronic bronchitis."
The cops were also given consultation for the hypertension and particularly for the respiratory disease. Dr Amit Gupta said chronic exposure to vehicular pollution/dust leads to a significant decrease in lung functions depending on amount and duration of exposure.
Dr Gupta said government can make glass cabins for the cops, leading to less exposure to direct pollution. Besides there should be regular check on pollution of cars etc by the authorities. Cops were suggested to wear masks.
ACP Richa Agnihotri also gave a call to take proper preventive measures to all the traffic cops and said that department also tries to keep check on pollution level on roads.
