Giving details, Gurdaspur SSP Gurpreet Singh Toor said here on Wednesday that the victim, who was a resident of Bahadur Naushehra village near here, worked at a factory in Ludhiana and had come in touch with accused Jai Prakash Mishra, originally from Uttar Pradesh, around two years ago.

Regalia Hotel authorities said Mishra booked a room in the hotel at around 10pm on Monday. A waiter said when he went into the room with the morning tea the next morning, he found Mishra and the girl watching TV.

Toor said Mishra allegedly raped her before strangulating her to death. Toor said the accused alleged wrote down the name of her father and the phone numbers of the girl and her family on her dress after killing her. The SSP said the accused also sent a message on her mobile phone to her family saying her body was lying at the hotel.

Toor said that on Tuesday evening, two women from her family arrived at the hotel and found the body. Meanwhile, the accused had left the hotel.

The post-mortem on the body was conducted at the local civil hospital and the body handed over to the family.
