In a statement, Makkar appealed to the Indian government to ensure the safety of Sikhs living in Afghanistan, who are becoming victims of hate crime.

He stated that hate crime incidents have become very frequent and needed to be curbed by taking up the matter on priority.

The situation has lead to a decline in the population of the Sikhs in Afghanistan and, presently, there are just 5,000 left and even they are living in fear. bMakkar added that communal elements are responsible for this decline in the population of the Sikh community in this country.
