A court here has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for strangling his wife to death as she could not bring in more dowry.

The Fatehgarh Sahib district and sessions judge also imposed a fine of Rs 50,0000 on Surmukh Singh failing to pay which he would have to spend three more years in jail.

On February 19 last year, Gurjant Singh had registered a case with the Bassi Pathana police against his younger sister Sona's husband, Surmukh, for allegedly harassing and murdering her for dowry.

According to Gurjant, his family had given Rs 7,000 as dowry to Surmukh at the time of his marriage to Sona. However, six months later, Surmukh started harassing his wife for more dowry. Gurjant's family then gave Rs 10,000 to Surmukh.

On January 15 last year, Sona came to her parent's place and told them that Surmukh was again harassing her for dowry. They, however, pacified her and sent her back to her in-laws' house.

On February 19 last year, when Gurjant and his father Labh Singh went to visit Sona at her in-laws' place in Dedran village near Bassi Pathana to enquire about her, they saw Surmukh strangling her.

Gurjant and Labh Singh raised an alarm, but Surmukh fled. However, Sona was dead by that time. Gurjant and Labh Singh then informed the police.
