In a complaint to the police, 50-year-old Manjit Kaur, Gurpreet's landlady, said that at about 6.30 am, she was taking a walk in the garden when she heard two gunshots. "Gurpreet was then going to drop his daughter to the bus stop. I heard the gunshots and saw our neighbour, Jatinderjit, running away," said Manjit.

"A case has been registered. We will soon nab the accused," said SAS Nagar SP (city) Swarandeep Singh.
Jatinderjit, who has been booked under sections 336 (endangering life or personal safety of others), 427 (mischief causing damage) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and various sections of the Arms Act, is absconding.

"About a month ago, Jatinderjit had asked Gurpreet not to park the vehicle outside his house, after which there was no argument over the issue," said Phase 1 police station SHO Gurdeep Singh.
