The deceased have been identified as Nirmal Dass (72) and his son Jatinder Dass (45), who was the village sarpanch. Nirmal also owned a dera in the village.

Nirmal and his estranged wife Shamsher Kaur (64) had been locked in a legal fight for the past several years over 22 acres of land. A local court recently pronounced a judgment in favour of Nirmal, who went along with Jatinder and revenue officials to take formal possession of the land on Monday.

As per the police, Shamsher and her son Achar Singh (40) reached the spot along with some unidentified persons and began a heated exchange with Nirmal and Jatinder.

The police added that according to witnesses, the father-son duo was shot in the head with .32-bore and .12-bore pistols from point-blank range. They died on the spot, even as the accused fled.

Jaswinder Singh Tiwana, station house officer (SHO), Sadar police, said a case had been registered under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the mother-son duo.
