People's Party of Punjab (PPP) president Manpreet Singh Badal on Saturday outrightly rejected the chances of his party's merger with the Congress. Talking to mediapersons after inaugurating a PPP office in the town, Manpreet said he was not the one to back out from his words. "Had I to join any other party, I would not have left the SAD," he retorted.
Taking exception to MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal's accusation that PPP was Congress' B-team, he said it was 'rubbish'. "The decision on an alliance with the Congress will be taken by the Sanjha Morcha at the appropriate time," he added.
Manpreet said, if invited, his party would attend the all-party meeting to discuss state's burning issues. He said the government had gone back on its promise it had made to the people in its manifesto by imposing fresh taxes. He said the fiscal position of the state was so dismal that these taxes would not fill the empty coffers. He cautioned the people against more tax burden in the coming days.
He also opposed the hike in diesel prices and termed it an 'irresponsible' action of the Centre. He welcomed PPP's former patron Dr SS Johl's appointment as chancellor of Central University and thanked the President for this act. He said his party would miss his guidance but the country would gain from his vast experience.
Later, Manpreet held a meeting with PPP workers at gurdwara Kalgidhar and asked them to make September 21 demonstration against failures of government a success.
He was accompanied by general council members BS Riar, Shamsher Singh Lit and Maninder Singh, district president Bhupinder Singh Ajram and youth wing president Amarjit Singh Dhadekatwal.
