In wake of the accident in Jalandhar in which 13 school children were killed recently, the Mansa district administration have started taking action against school buses and other vehicles, which are found violating norms.

In the past two days, DTO Karanvir Singh Chinna had impounded six school buses for violating norms. A number of other vehicles carrying school children were fined for overloading and for plying without complete documents. While buses in bad shape were impounded, overloaded vehicles were fined and issued a warning. The administration had also informed respective schools regarding violation by vehicles.

In February 2012, the Mansa deputy commissioner held a meeting with senior superintendent of police, district education officers and all school principles and instructed them ensure compliance with road-safety measures. The DTO was asked to keep a vigil on school buses and their drivers.

Speaking to HT, Mansa DTO Karanvir Singh said, “We had already started a drive because we cannot risk young lives. The Supreme Court guidelines on school buses will be enforced and vehicles in bad shape will not be allowed to ply.”
