In an unprecedented move, newly elected mayor Arun Sood got approved the agenda pertaining to shifting of water pipelines at Indira Colony in Manimajra, forwarded by BJP Chandigarh president Sanjay Tandon. The agenda was placed in the House meeting on January 29 and was approved in absence of Congress councillors who had boycotted the meeting.

Congress says it is gross violation of municipal corporation (MC) laws by the mayor, who is also an advocate. “As per MC Act, agenda should only be introduced by mayor, MC commissioner, MC secretary or area councillor,”the Congress leaders say.

In the agenda, it was mentioned that proposal of shifting of water supply lines in the encroached area was decided during the visit of party president Sanjay Tandon. Even BJP area councillor Desh Raj Gupta’s name was missing from the agenda.

“I am not aware whether Tandon’s name is there or not. I thought the MC’s engineer wing introduced the agenda. Party president cannot introduce the agenda in the house,”said Desh Raj Gupta.

When contacted, Arun Sood said, “I am not aware of party president’s name in the agenda. Congress have several times mentioned the names of senior Central Congress leaders. After their continues defeats, they are unable to digest it.”

The agenda

MC prepared an estimate amounting to `1.57 crore to cover the cost of shifting of water supply lines that fall in the encroached portion in courtyard of houses in Indira Colony, Manimajra. The estimate was prepared on the recommendation of BJP Chandigarh president Sanjay Tandon.
