In the wake of a proposal to increase the MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) seats from 150 to 200, a Medical Council of India (MCI) team visited Government Medical College in Amritsar on Saturday for inspection.
Visiting various sections and department of the college and its Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, the MCI team led by Dr RR Mohanti checked all the members of the staff, the related record, and the correctness of the certificate that the college had submitted earlier. The MCI will submit its report to the Union Ministry of Health. For the past more than five years, the college has been trying to get the MBBS seats increased. The MCI has been raising continuous objections.
At the end of 2014, the council had declined the college request to have more MBBS seats in the session 2015-16. Sources said the council had turned down the application at a very early stage, even before physical inspection, observing the essentiality certificate from the state government to be deficient and not in the prescribed format.
At that time, Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot; Patiala government medical college; and Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Amritsar, were allowed to add MBBS seats in the state.
