Officials claimed that only 6,304 candidates submitted fee out of the total applications received. Registration for the admission closed on Tuesday.

The candidates appeared for documents’ verification at Faridkot’s Guru Gobind Singh Medical College on Thursday .

A few students were seen inquiring about the decision to scrap the government-quota seats at Sri Guru Ram Das Medical College (SGRD), Amritsar. The state government is yet to take a call on the matter.

“SGRD college officials are already claiming to have the status of a medical university and are charging accordingly even when they are yet to attain the required permissions,” said Moga’s Nupur Mahajan. Principal Geeta Sharma claimed that the institute is authorised to convert the government quota seats into the management quota.

SGRD has 150 seats, with 75 in the government (general) quota and 75 in the management/ minority quota. The fee for minority/management quota is approximately Rs 40 lakh — four times the cost of a seat in government quota. Counselling for registered candidates is scheduled for July 17. In case, no decision is taken, students will fill their preference according to the current division of seats in the institute.
