Mobile phone jammer at Gurdaspur central jail causing problem to civilians

Residents living around the Gurdaspur central jail are facing connectivity problem after the installation of a mobile phone jammer at the jail. The jammer was installed a few months back to check unauthorised use of mobile phones by jail inmates threatening the security of the jail.

The frequency of the jammer is so powerful that it even impedes the mobile connectivity of civilians residing in localities such as Babbowal, Naven Litter, Bath Wali Gali, Dashmesh Nagar and Ward Number 27.

The residents of these localities complained to Gurdaspur deputy commissioner Abhinav Trikha about the problem faced by them. When contacted, Trikha told Hindustan Times that he had directed the jail authorities to redress the residents’ grievance on a priority.

Meanwhile, central jail superintendent DK Sidhu said he had convened a meeting with the representatives of the company that had installed the jammer in the jail and officials of various mobile network provides on Wednesday.

He said he had asked them all to sort out the problem faced by the residents.

Satish Kapoor, who runs a chemist shop on the Jail Road, said he had to move far away from his shop to attend or make phone calls, which had affected his business adversely.

SS Kahlon, a resident of Dashmesh Nagar, said all members of his family had been sore over the disturbed mobile phone connectivity.

Neeraj Salhotra, a resident of Bath Wali Gali, said the government should have assessed the possible problem to the civilians before installing the jammer at the jail.

The jail superintendent, however, said he would get the problem solved soon.
