Moga cop shoots at ‘friends’ for objecting to affair with relative

Victim Lakhwinder Singh told the police in the first information report (FIR) that he and Varinder Singh — both residents of Landhe village and known locally as kabaddi players of repute — were going home on a motorcycle around 10pm when Paramjeet, a resident of Rode, intercepted them in his Maruti Zen car and fired shots. Both received three bullet injuries each but were reported to be out of danger after a police team took them to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana, around 85km away. The FIR further said Paramjeet had a relationship with the wife of Lakhwinder’s cousin, and he had ignored objections by Lakhwinder and his friend Varinder.

A police team from Samalsar, under whose jurisdiction the area falls, rushed to the spot for investigation and took the two men to the Ludhiana hospital. Lakhwinder received one bullet injury on an arm and two on his back; and Varinder got shot in the chest, spinal cord and back. Paramjeet had left his car at the spot and the police were yet to nab him, though he was suspended from service and booked under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
