The work on the 300-metre drain started four months ago but the contractor abandoned it for reasons unclear. The road is inundated with filthy water and the main Usmanpur-Rahon drain is yet to be cleaned, posing danger to the crop nearby.

Problems year after year had forced the townsfolk to approach the local administration, which after spot inspection, saw the need for a small drain. In February, the project began.

"People were asked to contribute Rs 1 lakh and told that the administration would arrange rest," said municipal councillor Baldev Bharti. "A grant of Rs 2 lakh came from Anandpur Sahib parliamentarian Ravneet Singh Bittu but even after that, the work is incomplete," he added.

Bharti sees every chance that problems will revisit this monsoon. Townsman Paramjeet Singh sees water ravage a huge amount of crop every year because the drain on the Usmanpur-Rahon road is not cleaned. "Stagnant water emits stink but we can't avoid this road," he said.
