Eighteen years after it became a district, Nawanshahr police is still functioning from buildings that belong to other departments.
Informed accessed by HT under the RTI Act shows that the district has 11 police stations and six police posts. Of the 11 stations, five are running on land belonging to different departments.
The department also said that for running the Mukandpur police station, it has taken verbal permission from the gram panchayat. However, the department does not pay any rent to the panchayat for using the building.
Five out of six police posts of district have been running on the places or buildings of other departments without written permission. The police claim to have taken verbal permission from the authorities concerned in each case and is paying no rent for these posts.
An official with police department said that these police posts had been built since 1990 during the period of militancy in state and after that, department failed to make any effort to find other locations of its own. He added that the state government had also failed in its duty to provide land to the police for its functioning.

In that case, the police had vacated the building soon thereafter and had set up a post at a religious place in Aur.
