There is a need to upgrade standards of the Punjabi media to secure the Punjabi language, believed experts at the third world Punjabi media conference organised by World Punjabi Television/ Radio Academy at Doaba College.
"Media, being an influential force, can play an important role in shaping of society and its attributes like language and culture and it has to play a constructive role in this regard for the development of an ideal society where art and life may freely flourish", said
Dr. Ajaib Singh Brar, vice-chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar and Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema, education minister were the chief guests at the inauguaryion ceremony of the two-day confernece.
The main theme of the conference is Punjabi media - present and contemporary times. The panel included keynote speaker, Satnam Singh Manak, executive editor, Ajit Group, Chander Mohan, president, Arya Shiksha Mandal, Dr. Om Gauri Dutt Sharma, deputy director, Doordarshan and senior journalists Major Singh, Giani Santokh Singh.
Cheema expressed concern that software related equipment such as computers, smart phones, i-pads and other accessories should be equipped with Punjabi font, lest the youth got distracted from their mother tongue.
On majority of private schools discouraging students on use of Punjabi language, Manak said that still many schools have not implemented the decision of making use of Punjabi language by the students.
Manak added that the current problems and needs of Punjabi journalism can be redressed only if the education and judicial system are localised in Punjabi language.
As many as 20 paper presenters from Australia, New-Zealand, Canada and India presented their papers in the first session and 58 delegates along with 150 students participated on the first day.
