Despite the issue has been highlighted several times, the municipal corporation has failed to remove the unauthorised garbage dump from along the nullah.

The civic body had announced to impose Rs 5,000 fine on those throwing garbage in the nullah but the ground reality has not changed much since.

Besides garbage, sewage and chemical waste from various industries are also discharged into the nullah as a result of which local residents keep complaining of various ailments.

Recently, SK Sandhu, principal secretary to the chief minister, had directed the officials concerned to take measures to stop the nullah from getting polluted.

The MC, however, has failed to take any concrete step in this direction. Local residents and visitors to the localities around the nullah complain that they have to cover their face while passing by the place.

Ravinder Singh, a frequent visitor to the area, said, “I pass through this road while covering my face with handkerchief since it stinks so much. The authorities concer ned should take strict action in this regard.”

Amarjit Singh Sekhon, chief, health and sanitation department of municipal corporation, said, “We will take required steps to deal with the issue. We are already looking for an alternative site for the garbage dump.”
