No-confidence motion against Mandi Gobindgarh MC president

Thirteen councillors and the Amloh MLA are lobbying to dethrone Dharampal Rao, president, municipal council, Mandi Gobindgarh.

On Monday, they submitted a no-confidence motion against Rao, a state-level BJP leader.The no-confidence motion was signed by Amloh MLA Randeep Singh and 13 councillors from Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Congress and some independents.

The motion was addressed to the executive officer (EO) of MC, Mandi Gobindgarh, but since he was absent, it was submitted to superintendent of the council.

The councilors, who had signed the no-confidence motion, met Fatehgarh Sahib deputy commissioner Yashvir Mahajan and handed over a copy of the motion.

The copies were also sent to principal secretary, director and deputy director of local bodies department and president, MC, Mandi Gobindgarh.

Two former municipal councilors -Sukhwinder Singh Bhambri, who belongs to SAD, and Joginder Pal Singla, who is senior leader of Congress, have also signed the motion.

District Congress committee, Fatehgarh Sahib, president Harinder Singh Bhambri had also extended support to dethrone the president.

The councilors accused the MC president of corruption, the charges denied by Rao.

As per rules, 14 members of the council can dethrone the president in this case.

Mandi Gobindgarh is one of the richest councils in the state.

Presently, the post of president is reserved for the scheduled caste category. Apart from Rao, two other candidates, Harpal Singh Nasrali and Satnam Singh, are eligible for the post.
