The minister was in town to chair the PGI’s governing body and the institute body meeting. The meetings were paperless, a PGI release claimed.

At the meeting, the members of the board authorised Nadda, the president of the institute, to form a special selection committee to appoint the director.

“Chawla retires in September next year, even as his term at the PGI ends October 6. Considering the remaining term, there was talk that he might get an extension,” said an administrative officer at the PGI.

The selection process for a new director had started in March. An advertisement was issued by the institute seeking applications and than 40 were received.

The next step was the formation of special screening committee.

“The short-listed names will be sent to the health minister who will finalise the selection,” he added.
