Though residents have launched personal cleanliness drives at their homes in view of Diwali, yet it seems that it will not be a clean or ‘swachh’ Diwali for the city as heaps of garbage can be seen in every nook and corner of the city.
More than a year after the ‘Swachh Bharat’ campaign was launched in the country, the situation of cleanliness in the city remains unchanged. Various areas in the city are dotted with heaps of garbage and it is not uncommon to find stray cattle feeding on them. The civic body seems to have turned a blind eye towards the problem.
A random survey carried out by The Hindustan Times revealed that even after the start of the door-to door garbage collection scheme, litter is seen dumped along roadsides and in vacant plots across the city.
No doubt, the civic body has indentified 36 secondary door-to-door garbage dumping points in the city, but the delay in lifting of garbage from these points is also making matters worse.
“The civic body must show the way to the people by regularly cleaning public places and should not restrict the job to only a day,” said Gurdeep Singh Bhuttar, a local resident.

{{/usCountry}}The civic body has also failed to clean the area near the bus stand and foul smell emanating from public urinals and heaps of garbage welcomes visitors.
The sanitation situation is worst in Lal Singh Basti, Paras Ram Nagar, Amarpura Basti, Partap Nagar, Multania Road and Sanjay Nagar.
Mayor Balwant Rai Nath said the MC staff were already on the job and garbage dumps would be cleared before Diwali. “We have set up temporary garbage dumping points and directed the staff concerned to clear the dumps by Tuesday evening,” he said.
