The Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee has ordered the closure of two microbreweries — The Great Bear. Sector 26, and Malt and Co in Sector 22 — after these were found to be functioning without clearance.

Sources said the microbreweries were issued notices 15 days ago and were asked to explain why they did not obtain a no-objection certificate from the Pollution Control Board beforehand. (HT Photo)

The state excise department issues a licence for a microbrewery or a brew pub that typically produce between 5,000 and 50,000 litres of beer a day. Such establishments are also supposed to get waste water disposal certificate from the pollution control board.

These are resto-bars where one can consume fresh-off-the-tap beer that has been brewed in-house. The committee has also ordered registration of case against the outlets under Sections of the Water Act, 1974 and Air Act, 1981.

Sources said the microbreweries were issued notices 15 days ago and were asked to explain why they did not obtain a no-objection certificate from the Pollution Control Board beforehand.

The estate office has been informed about the decision and asked to close down these two microbreweries.
