More than a dozen colleges of the district participated in the first legal literacy festival at Litigants' Hall on the district courts campus. District and sessions judge Gurbir Singh inaugurated the festival.

Students representing different colleges participated in poetry recitation, photography, declamation, slogan-writing, poster-making, histrionics and PowerPoint presentation contests. The winners advanced to the zonal leg of the event to be held in Bathinda on November 17.

"The event will create legal awareness among all citizen through youth," said district and sessions judge Gurbir Singh. "Our focus is to promote the awareness of laws against corruption, female foeticide, drug abuse, dowry, crime against women, and pollution, besides highlighting the legal rights of children, women and senior citizens." The PLSA plans to form legal literacy clubs in colleges.

Kawaljit Singh, secretary of the district legal services authority, talked about the concepts of legal assistance, legal aid clinics, and Lok Adalat. "Not limited to providing the poor with free-of-cost consultancy, the role of the legal service authority includes bringing them early justice," he said.
