Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday summoned Jalandhar deputy commissioner Priyank Bharti to appear before it on July 30, during a hearing of a contempt petition filed by social worker Dilbag Singh.
The DC has failed to implement a court order passed on January 4, 2012, directing him to restart work on the Nurmahal grain market.
On January 4, a bench comprising chief justice Rajan Gogoi and justice Mahesh Grover directed the DC to settle the matter amicably and restart work on the new grain market within three months from the date of receiving a copy of the court order.
The petitioner submitted in the court that area farmers were unloading wheat in
post-harvested open fields on the railway road and roadsides of Phillaur and Nakodar roads. The farmers had no other choice as the old grain market was not inadequate to accommodate daily arrival of huge quantity of wheat.
The DC had directed the Nurmahal grain market to find an alternative place for unloading wheat.
Religious sect Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan has been opposing the construction of the grain market.
