The city police have beefed up the security in and around Amritsar ahead of the Republic Day celebrations on Sunday.
The police are carrying anti-sabotage checking at vital point such as the railway station, bus stand and the Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport besides regular checking of vehicles during the morning and evening hours.
Bikram Pal Singh Bhatti, deputy commissioner of police, Amritsar, said, “In total, 29 checking points have been identified and at each point 15 police personal are deployed. Checking of vehicles and even questioning of the occupants, if needed, is being done.”
The DCP said 250 patrolling vehicles were also moving in the city to keep tabs on key areas and roads.
Nearly 900 police personnel have been deputed ahead of the Republic Day. The vigil will be even higher on Sunday, added the DCP.
“We will have 150 more police personnel in place on Sunday to make the total deployed strength 1,100. We are on a high alert so that no untoward incident takes place,” the police official informed.
The Amritsar police are conducting checking at the railway station and the bus stand twice a day.
Only Taylor Road will be closed for some time on Sunday. The other routes will be closed for 10 minutes only when the VIP entry is made, DCP Bhatti said.
Efforts are being made to ensure that the public does not face any hassle on the Republic Day in the city, he added.
