Punjab Police have booked over a thousand farmers for blocking national and state highways at Bhawanigarh, Longowal, Dirba, Sunam, Lehra, Dhuri and Ahmedgarh during their protest against the state government for its failure to implement complete farms debt waiver.
Farmers in Bhawanigarh, Longowal and Dirba have been booked under Section 8B of The National Highways Act, 1956, which is a non-bailable offence.
Though no arrest has been made so far, farmer organisations termed it injustice and alleged that the Captain Amarinder Singh government is trying to curb their democratic right.
Police registered seven FIRs in the district alleging that the activists of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta-Ugrahan) and BKU (Dakaunda), along with other farmer outfits, blocked traffic and violated district administration orders.
Most of farmers have been booked under Section 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 283 (Danger or obstruction in public way or line of navigation), 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian penal Code (IPC) and 8B (punishment for mischief by injury to national highway) of The National Highways Act.
“The farmers blocked traffic and violated national highway act. We have registered cases against protesters at seven police stations of the district and further action will be taken after investigation” said Harmeet Singh Hundal, superintendent of police (detective).
