The traffic wing of the local police has come up with a new idea to verify vehicle ownership and deter vehicle-lifting incidents.

While the government has been banking upon high security number plates to deter such incidents, the local traffic wing is advocating the vehicle owner's mobile phone number and email id as two tools which can verify ownership.

According to the traffic police, if the vehicle owner's phone number was present on the registration certificate (RC) of the vehicle, then vehicle-lifting could be deterred.

If a person bought a used vehicle, mobile number could also be changed along with the ownership.

The traffic wing has written a letter to the state transport commissioner and is looking forward to a favourable reply from the department. ACP (traffic wing) Harjit Singh said aided by the owner's mobile number, traffic cops could easily trace whether the vehicle was stolen or not.

“A cop who is deployed to check a vehicle's registration documents, could just call the mobile number mentioned on the registration certificate to cross check ownership,” said Singh.

The ACP further said sometimes, a vehicle's occupant who would claim ownership could easily lie about their name too.

According to the traffic police, it takes at least a day to verify vehicle ownership from the district transport office.

Delay in the process not only makes it difficult for cops but also for the vehicle's owner.
