In a release, Brar has claimed that he has got special instructions from Sonia Gandhi, Congress president, and Rahul Gandhi, vice-president, to be permanently present in the state during the panchayat elections from June 19 to the July 3.

"There is a strong apprehension in the party that the Akali Dal will try their level best to get there sarpanches elected with fraudulent means by using official machinery," said Brar.
"The report submitted by me about the recently held zila parishad and block samiti elections in Punjab has been taken seriously by the party high command," he added.

"Ahmed Patel, political adviser to the Congress president, also called me at his residence in the afternoon to prepare a comprehensive strategy for these elections," said Brar.

He added that the party feels that if the Akali Dal-BJP combine again 'hijacks' the panchayat elections, it will be very difficult for the Congress to give a good performance during the Lok Sabha elections.
