Panchayat polls: scrutiny of nomination papers today

The scrutiny of nominations for the panchayat polls would be held on Monday. Rajat Aggarwal, deputy commissioner-cum-distric election officer said 4,042 candidates were in fray for the election of sarpanches for 843 villages, while 16,165 candidates were contesting for the 5,326 posts of panch.

"On June 25, the candidates can withdraw their nominations," he said, adding that rehearsals had been conducted at different places for the smooth conduct of the panchayat elections. "The SDMs have been issued orders to issue notices to those found absent during the rehearsals. A strict action would be taken against the absentees," he said.

He added that more than 8,000 employees and 120 supervisors have been deputed on election duty.

"Rehearsals were held at Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Mai Bhago College and SSS School, Ajnala," said
