Panchayats honoured for resolutions to close liquor vends

Taking a step towards curbing the increasing liquor and drug addiction among Punjabi youths, a few social organisations, on Sunday, honoured the gram panchayats of the district that have passed resolutions to close down liquor vends in their respective villages.

The social organisations included the Scientific Awareness And Social Welfare (SASW) Forum, Red Cross Drug de- addiction centre, Samaj Bhalai Manch, Sherpur and Birdh Ashram, Badrukhan.

Addressing the gathering at Gurdwara Jotisar Sahib Khurana, senior advocate HC Arora expressed concern over the increasing drug addiction among the youths, due to which youths are losing lives.

“If the Punjab government is really interested to check the drugs and alcohol consumption, the resolutions of panchayats against liquor vends should be accepted,” Arora said, adding, “I would fight the case of panchayats free of any charge in the Punjab and Haryana high court if need arises.”

The 11 panchayats, which were honoured on the occasion, included Hari Garh, Hareri, Khilria, Munshi wala, Natt, Kanjla, Kaheru, Jhaner, Gobindgar Jejian, Esapur and Didargar.
