Police sources said that the victim -- Saina, daughter of an industrial worker -- was playing with her siblings on Saturday evening when she suddenly disappeared.

It was alleged that the child had fallen into an uncovered manhole in the industrial area, where the family resided. Following a search, an infant’s body was spotted floating in the manhole, which was later identified by her father, Mustafa Khan.

The district authorities have provided a financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to the aggrieved family.

Meanwhile, taking serious note of the incident, deputy commissioner (DC) Sameer Pal Srow today asked joint municipal commissioner Ashwini Kumar Maingi to submit a probe report on the case within 72 hours.

The DC also empanelled the Panipat municipal corporation superintending engineer, executive engineers of the public health and Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) as part of the committee looking into whether the uncovered sewer line was responsible for the tragic incident.

“All points would be inspected and a strict action would be initiated if any unsafe spot is found in city,” said Srow.
