The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Thursday congratulated Ram Nath Kovind on being elected as the 14th President of the country, even as it appreciated the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in nominating a farmer’s son to the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Both former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal said the victory of Kovind was also a victory of rational forces who wanted to take the country forward. “We would also like to congratulate Kovind for the manner in which he managed to take everyone along with him due to the force of his personality and self deeds”, they added.

The SAD also appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision in nominating a “farmer’s son” for the coveted office.

Former chief minister said Kovind was also a role model for India’s youth.

Kovind defeated the opposition’s Meira Kumar, a former Lok Sabha speaker, by garnering more than 65 per cent of the votes in the electoral college.
