SHO at the Tripari police station Shaminder Singh said complainant Satpal Kaur alleged there was a rift between her son Harcharanvir Singh and daughter-in-law Balwinder Kaur over some issue for past many months.

Balwinder had also slapped a case against Satpal for compensation, as she was living separately in a rented accommodation, said police.

The SHO said in the meantime, the accused, Sukhjit, tried to act as middleman and offered complainant to execute reconciliation between her son and daughter-in-law.

“Sukhjit demanded `10,000 for reconciling them following which he started pressurising me to stick with his deal. When I refused, he barged into my house, assaulted me, and threatened me of dire consequences,” Satpal said.

The accused Sukhjit is purportedly a protégé of rural and panchayat development minister Surjit Singh Rakhra.
