While the news of Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) campus for an industry seminar has brought cheers to traders, students on campus are not too happy as they have been asked to remain inside their hostels on Monday and Tuesday due to the visit.
Modi is set to visit the PAU campus to attend the event for micro small and medium enterprises (MSME) on Tuesday. Students living in hostels were informed by their respective wardens that movement during the visit of the PM and a day before would be restricted.
Many students have already left the hostels due to the direction of the varsity administration and also due to the holiday declared by the varsity on both days due to the VVIP visit, university authorities revealed.
In an official order, PAU vice-chancellor BS Dhillon declared a holiday on October 17 and 18 on account of the PM’s visit.
At least 20 examinations of mid-term that were going on were also postponed and have been slated for October 21 owing to the visit.
A girl student who lives in the hostel, on the condition of anonymity, said that the visit of the Prime Minister has lead to chaos for the students. “We have been asked not to move out of the hostels when the PM would be delivering his speech. Moreover, we have also been asked to restrict our movement on Monday and Tuesday in general,” said the student. Dean students welfare (DSW) RK Dhaliwal said that the students have been asked to ensure that they carry their identity cards with them for the coming two days.

Minister of state for Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Giriraj Singh on Sunday visited Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) to review the arrangements being made for the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
PM Modi is scheduled to visit the varsity on Tuesday to take part in an event in which nearly 225 industrialists would be awarded.
Giriraj said that the visit of Modi would give a new direction to the industry of the state and added
that the PM would be the chief guest at the event where industrialists from across the state would come.
Giriraj along with deputy commissioner Ravi Bhagat and BJP district Chief Ravinder Arora came to PAU to take stock of the arrangements.
“Besides big industries that are the focus of central government, small and micro industries are also being promoted as they are also a driving force for the economy of the nation” said Giriraj.
