Against an income of Rs 265.97 crore, including the Rs 59-crore annual grant from the state government, the varsity's total expenditure is pegged at Rs 359.73 crore.

For 2012-13, the total deficit was Rs 70 crore, while it was Rs 59 crore for 2011-12.

The budget was passed during the sundicate meeting, chaired by vice-chancellor Jaspal Singh.

The syndicate also okayed granting of life fellowship to the noted social scientist, Prof Randhir Singh.

It apex decision-making body also gave its approval for re-employment of university teachers on contract basis for a period of three years after retirement under the 'voluntary re-employment scheme'.

Earlier, the retired teachers were having the option of getting two years of re-employment. This decision may attract some opposition from student organisations and a few teachers' bodies.

The project to make documentaries on the lives and contribution of noted Punjabi litterateurs was also approved by the syndicate. The project will be undertaken by the punjabi literary studies department. Diet money for various categories of sportspersons was also increased.
