Giving this information, Media Centre director Gurmeet Singh Maan, who has been appointed member of the core group of the selected group of institutes established under the union ministry of human resource development to have a path-breaking impact on the educational scenario of the country, said that to begin with the ministry had decided to set up about 50 free-to-air DTH channels to "commence the delivery of educational content round the clock in various subjects".

The objective of launching the DTH channel is "to achieve the composite goals of ensuring access with equity and excellence in higher education and bridging the digital divide that exists in our society today".

Punjabi University has been selected "based on the experience of the institute" and performance of its Media Centre in the recent past. The programme would be completely funded by the union ministry, Maan said.

The ambitious project of the government included launching 1,000 such educational channels during the times to come to air live and recorded telecast of educational content for the global students' community, Maan added.
