Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) director Dr YK Chawla on Monday announced that UT administration has decided to provide the institute 100-acre land that was vacated last year from slum-dwellers. The PGI will develop it as its second campus comprising institutional and residential areas, which will be located in Sectors 50, 51, 52, 53.
Dr Chawla was addressing the faculty on Tuesday to resolve the ongoing protest of the senior doctors. He said this would help resolve multiple problems of the institute. The faculty was demanding new housing project for the doctors. The institute has increased faculty strength in the past one decade but couldn’t add even a single house to its existing capacity.
A senior official from the PGIMER, who wished not to be named, said that they were also planning to request the administration to exchange the said land with tracts available in Saranagpur, because that will be real extension of the institute.
Even in its master plan, the UT administration had observed that the Sarangpur land was best suited for PGI’s expansion. “Though this piece of land was shown in the draft Master Plan as residential, but will better serve the needs of the town and surrounding areas as a hospital and research centre for decades to come, being directly accessible to Punjab, Haryana and Himachal by highways,” the master plan draft had observed.
Earlier, the institute also got 10-acre land in Mullanpur to set up a satellite centre. Significantly, currently the institute has 277 acres of land in Sector 12. The institute had a massive expansion plan for which the land had been a major constraint.
