The health department is set to work out a plan to provide cheap generic medicines at the civil hospital to poor patients from this year.
For this purpose, a committee of seven members has been formed after instructions of state health minister Surjit Kumar Jyani, who raided the civil hospital here on December 20 and found that most medicines were not available in the hospital.
The committee held its first meeting on Tuesday at the civil surgeon's office on Tuesday where it directed doctors of the civil hospital to send lists of specialised drugs so that these can be provided at Jan Aushidhi centre at the hospital.
Committee members include civil surgeon Rattan Lal Bassan, medical superintendent Dr Jagjit Singh Cheema, senior medical officer Dr KS Bawa, officials of Red Cross Society, drug inspectors and others.
The members participating in the meeting asked the civil surgeon and the medical superintendent to take steps to make available all the 243 medicines at the civil hospital. They regretted that only 80 medicines were available at the hospital.
The doctors have been asked to submit their lists to Dr Bawa by January 5.
