The deaths of 44-year-old Pankaj Gupta, a cardiologist at Medanta - The Medicity, and his three-year-old daughter on April 21 has finally spurred the city authorities to take action to make roads in Gurgaon safer.
Gupta and his daughter were mowed down by a Haryana Roadways bus as they waited outside their home for the child’s school bus. Both the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) and the traffic police have chalked out plans to help make roads safer.
Huda has roped in a consultant to work out a model based on the best international practices to help put measures in place to make the city roads safer and reduce the number of accidents drastically. “We have engaged a consultant to prepare a plan based on international standards to help make the city streets pedestrian-friendly and safer. The plan should be implemented soon as the poll process is also coming to an end,” said PC Meena, Huda administrator.
The Gurgaon traffic police too have come up with a plan to deal with the chaos normally witnessed at Subhash Chowk, where the accident occurred. “We have planned to survey the roads around Subhash Chowk to help devise measures to control the traffic and do away with the engineering defects at the intersection,” said Vikas Kaushik, deputy commissioner of police (traffic).
