In a bid to take tough stand on curbing practice of quacks in the city, the Punjab Medical Council (PMC) wrote to the Ludhiana deputy commissioner of police (DCP) to register an FIR against Dr Sumeet Sofat, who is practicing as mediacl practitioner even after his cancellation of registration last year.
Dr Sofat is continuing his practice and also advertising for his services which are illegal according to provisions of the Punjab Medical Registration Act 1916 and (Amedment) Act 2010 as his registration as medical practitioner was cancelled by the PMC on July 15 last year after he was being convicted in a criminal case.
He was awarded six months imprisonment and a fine of `3000 by the court.
Dr Sofat has defaced walls of various places of the city with his advertisements in which he explains his specialty of dealing with childless couples or other men related problems.
DCP Nilambari Jagdle said she had received the complaint and necessary action would be taken after the verification of the complaint by the department.
The PMC has been acting tough on irregularities of all medical practitioners in the city and issued guidelines to act according to laws only. Recently, notices were also issued to doctors who were found advertising their services. The doctors were also asked to practice according to their specialisation only and not to accept hefty gifts from pharma companies.
