The district police, on Friday, foiled the pre-announced protest by anganwadi workers to be held at the circuit house by detaining the workers before the protest. However, the police released them in the evening.

The All Punjab Anganwadi Mulazim Union (APAMU) had announced to hold protests at the district headquarters of Punjab and the Bathinda district unit had announced to take out a protest march from the Children’s Park to the deputy commissioner’s office between 1 pm to 3 pm and burn an effigy of the government there.

As the anganwadi workers started to reach the park, the police started to catch them and put them in police vehicles. They were then taken to various police stations.

State president of the union Hargobind Kaur said that the police started to detain the anganwadi workers before the start of the protest march and sent them to various police stations. She said that about 400 anganwadi workers were detained by police.

She said about 28 lakh anganwadi workers are working under the anganwadi scheme throughout the country.

She announced that anganwadi workers of Fazilka and Ferozepur districts will hold district-level protests on December 1. Anganwadi workers of Faridkot district would also hold a protest on Friday, she added.
