Police foil students plan to block road

The Bathinda police on Friday foiled students' plan to stage a protest and block road by cordoning off the Punjabi University Regional Centre campus where students had gathered.

The Bathinda police on Friday foiled students' plan to stage a protest and block road by cordoning off the Punjabi University Regional Centre campus where students had gathered.

The students were demanding immediate arrest of those who had assaulted a student leader on September 19 over the bus ticket issue. The students of various colleges collectively staged protest earlier in September on Bibiwala Road, but on Friday, the police foiled their plans. Police also assured the students to arrest the accused soon.

On Friday, a number of students had gathered at Punjabi University Regional Centre to stage a protest. However, the police cordoned off the college and didn't let student protest.

Canal Colony station house officer said, “None of the student has been detained. We only foiled their plan to block the road. We requested them to disperse or face arrests if they blocked the road. The students from other villages had also reached in a bus that was parked in front of college. We did not enter the college campus.”

The issue

On September 19, unidentified people assaulted some students, inclduing a Punjab Student Union leader Gurpreet Singh, 22, over the issue of not purchasing the bus ticket, whereas the students claimed of having passes.
