Police seize 3,600 kg poppy husk, two held

The local police on Friday claimed to have seized 3,600 kg poppy husk worth Rs 35 lakh in the market with the arrest of two persons.

The local police on Friday claimed to have seized 3,600 kg poppy husk worth Rs 35 lakh in the market with the arrest of two persons.

The accused have been identified as Amarjeet Singh alias Amardeep (30) of Samana of Patiala, and Veer Chand (29) of Bajda Colony of Jodhewal.

Giving details, additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP) City-3 Joginder Singh said inspector Harpal Singh Grewal, incharge, CIA staff-1, along with a police party, set up a naka at Sarih village on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the accused, who were headed towards Ludhiana from Malerkotla, approached in a mini truck. He said the police intercepted the mini truck and frisked it.

Inspector Harpal Singh said in a bid to outsmart the police, the accused had hid the 102 sacks of poppy husk under 13 sacks of garlic.

The police claimed that the accused admitted to have procured the contraband from Madhya Pradesh, and were on their way to hand it over to one Rana.

Inspector Grewal said the police had launched a manhunt to arrest Rana. The police are also investigating if the accused have a criminal record.
