The Punjab Police are not taking any chances as regards to security of kabaddi players who are arriving from different countries to participate in the fourth World Kabbadi Cup tournament, scheduled to commence from November 30.

Police heads of all districts where the matches are to be played have been asked to heighten security arrangements for the participating teams. Acting on intelligence leads that extremist groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba, Indian Mujahideen, HUJI and Babbar Khalsa International could try to disrupt the matches, the police force have been put on high alert.

As many as 12 men teams from India, Argentina, US, England, Canada, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Iran, Denmark, Kenya, Scotland and Spain and seven women teams from India, USA, England, Denmark, Kenya, Mexico, Pakistan and New Zealand are expected to participate in the tournament. Opening ceremony is going to be held on Saturday in Bathinda.

Sources revealed that the police were also on their toes following the Prime Minister's directives at the recent conference of state DGPs, where he spoke about likelihood of attempts of terror attacks during the forthcoming Lok Sabha and assembly elections.

The employees have threatened to disrupt the show, ruing that the government had no money to pay their salaries but had enough for entertaining celebrities.

State ADGP (security) Dinkar Gupta revealed that more than 5,000 police personnel had been deputed for the kabaddi event. "We have made tight security arrangements for the players as well as at the places of their stay and match venues," he said.
