Dibal was appointed by the California City Council and will be sworn in on December 5, KCRA-TV, an NBC-affiliated television station, reported.

There are other Sikh mayors across the country with Ravi Bhalla elected earlier this month as mayor in Hoboken, New Jersey.

However, Didbal is the first Sikh woman to be elected mayor in the country. Didbal was elected to Yuba City Council in 2014 and is the vice-mayor at present. She is the first in her family to graduate from college.

“I am honoured and humbled to serve our community. I truly thank you for your support. May God continue to guide us to that which provides peace and gratitude,” Preet posted on her Facebook page after her election on November 9.

“Seeing someone that looks like you, that comes from the same faith as you, to be elected in a public office in this country is inspiring and exciting. And it’s definitely moving,” Jaydeep Singh with the Sikh Coalition said.

The Sutter-Yuba region is home to one of the largest Sikh communities in the country.

On November 8, Bhalla became the first ever Sikh mayor of New Jersey’s Hoboken city after stiff competition that turned ugly when he was labelled a terrorist in slanderous fliers.

The Sikh Coalition estimates five lakh people who follow the Sikh faith live in the United States.
