Punjab’s ruling party, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), on Friday backed the demand for probe into the online leak of movie ‘Udta Punjab’, which covers the controversial issue of drug abuse in the state. At the same time, the party sought to point a finger towards the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the leak.

The pirated, leaked version is apparently uncensored, which means it contains the scene that was cut in the approved version, or the added disclaimers.

The leak needs to be seen in the background of claims by state Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh that he would show the entire film in an uncensored form in villages of Punjab, including Majitha, according to SAD spokesperson and general secretary Harcharan Bains. “Captain Amarinder Singh..., his Congress and AAP are the only ones who have been talking of showing this film uncensored to people,” Bains added.

Bains insisted in his statement, “The possibility of the film being pirated for political reasons by some unprincipled and unscrupulous political parties who want to grab power through hook or crook needs to be looked into. These parties are waging a war against Punjab’s image while SAD and Punjab government are waging a war on drugs.”
