The Dental Council of India Vice President, Prof Dr Mahesh Mehta, has advised the government to open more dental hospitals than dental colleges, so that high-level dental care facilities can be extended to the grassroot levels.
In an interview to Hindustan Times, Dr Mehta said the country was producing over 25,000 dental doctors annually and there was no need to open more dental colleges. He said that by opening more dental colleges we might be producing more dental doctors but unable to provide jobs to them. He said some of them were not capable of setting up their own independent practice as it require very high level of skills to operate in emergency.
Dr Mehta, who is also a president of the Dental Association of India and the Director-Principal of the Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences hails from a small village, Jagat-Khanna of Bilaspur district.
Dr Mehta said generally our attitude towards the dental care was laidback whereas mouth disease lead to many problems in the body. He said every second person faced dental-related problems and require dental doctor's help.
He said as compared with other states, Himachal was far ahead in health care. He said in the government sector over 500 dentists and over 5,000 doctors were extending health care service to public in the government sector. He said it became possible due to the Himachal Government's extra attention towards the public health care programme of the central and the state government. He hoped that in future the state government would extend the specialized dental care quality services at the village level. Dr Mehta said dentistry had become high-tech in the urban areas.
