Punjab Technical University (PTU) is yet to pursue its case in the Delhi high court regarding restarting admissions to its distance education programme, despite getting permission from the University Grants Commission (UGC) earlier this month to resume the programme for students in the state.
Sources said the union ministry of human resource development (MHRD) had on August 6 issued a letter of approval from the UGC to the university to continue with the programme. But the university is yet to inform the high court for vacating the stay on fresh admissions.
Two years ago, the court had barred PTU from conducting admissions under its distance education programme since the university did not have mandatory approval from the Distance Education Council (DEC).
The programme was closed two years ago throughout the country. Meanwhile, PTU has asked distance learning centres not to initiate admissions till the university gives them the go-ahead.
The owner of a learning centre said, "We have received a letter from the university, stating that since there is a stay on making new admissions by the Delhi high court, there should be no new admissions till orders are issued by the PTU registrar."
When contacted, PTU public relations officer Rajneesh Sharma said the university was not aware of the facts as the matter was taken up by the Punjab technical education department and the MHRD. He added, "The vice-chancellor will take up the issue on Monday with the technical education department."
