Punjab is the first state in India to have a sports policy, said finance minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa, while inaugurating the fourth-annual athletic meet of the University College in Chunni, here on Tuesday.
Recounting the state government’s initiatives to promote sports, Dhindsa said the government had set up sports institutes to train sportspersons for international competitions.
“We spend Rs 65 crore every year on such institutes,” said Dhindsa, adding that the government had doubled the diet cost of players. “We have established 25 new colleges to provide education to rural youth,” he said.
